Black Students Early Career Day

Posting date: 19/09/2025

What happens when you put curious students, inspiring professionals, and career wisdom into one room? You get the Black Students and Early Career Open Day! A buzzing, interactive event hosted by Delivery Hero’s Black Heroes Employee Resource Group.

This wasn’t your average ‘sit and listen’ type of career fair. There were panel discussions with real talk, practical workshops with insider tips, and networking that really felt more like a community.

The goal? Simple but powerful: to connect Black students and early career talent with opportunities in tech and product.

Creating Intentional Spaces

The Open Day was born out of Delivery Hero’s ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Our amazing Black Heroes ERG saw a need to create intentional spaces for underrepresented talent to thrive, and this event was the answer. The idea was to offer more than information, it was about giving attendees tools, connections, and a clear sense of possibility.

The agenda was full:

  • ‘Day in the Life’ panel featuring Delivery Hero professionals in tech and product roles.
  • A keynote on Career Pathways & Opportunities.
  • Recruiter Team presenting early careers programs and the recruitment process.
  • Breakout rooms with hands-on advice, like how to pivot careers, ace technical interviews, and build an online presence that actually stands out.
  • Plus a little bit of networking, because careers aren’t built on just what you know, but who you connect with along the way!

Systemic Barriers

Breaking into tech can be tricky. For Black students and early-career talent, systemic barriers can make that challenge even bigger. By giving attendees direct access to professionals who look like them, who’ve navigated similar paths, and who are willing to share their tips, we try to bridge the gap between ambition and opportunity.

It also ties perfectly to one of our leadership principles at Delivery Hero: Raise the Bar. For us, that means setting ambitious goals, not just for our business, but for how we shape the future of talent.

It’s about hiring and developing the best by opening doors for underrepresented groups, and creating high-performing teams that reflect the diversity of the world we serve. It’s about providing feedback, guidance, and practical tools so early-career talent can grow, thrive, and push the bar even higher for the next generation.

What we learned (and what’s next)

The sessions sparked some big takeaways:

  • Career paths aren’t linear, there are pivots, surprises, and lessons along the way.
  • Technical interviews don’t have to be scary (when you know how to prepare).
  • Mentorship and networking are game-changers, especially in today’s hybrid world.
  • And judging by the feedback, participants walked away with not just notes, but action plans: applying for roles, joining our Talent Community, and polishing their career strategies.
  • Was it successful? Absolutely. But more importantly, it felt like the start of something bigger.

Next up, we’ll keep the momentum going: following up with attendees, opening applications for our Tech Graduate Program (next cohorts: October 2025 and April 2026), and hosting more events that put diversity and inclusion front and center.
