Black History Month: A Time to Reflect, Learn & Celebrate

October is always a special month, a time when our community comes together to celebrate, reflect, and honor the impact of the Black community across history and culture.

This year’s Black History Month celebrations at Delivery Hero were nothing short of inspiring, from learning about the history of black hair and identity to dancing, connecting, and sharing stories in collaboration with the Black Heroes Employee Resource Group.

Workshop & Exhibition

Celebrations kicked off with our workshop and exhibition, which transformed the Berlin campus into an interactive space for learning and reflection.

The highlight was the Black Hair History Documentary & Interaction: A session that explored the deep cultural significance of Black hair. Heroes learned powerful stories, including how braids were used to carry seeds and even map out escape routes, turning hair into a symbol of survival and resistance.

The experience served as a  powerful reminder that what might seem like style or fashion, often has deep historical and cultural roots.

The session also sparked thoughtful discussions about modern expressions of identity, self-love, and the ongoing conversations around cultural appropriation.

Dance Class

The incredible Luana Àsiba Madikera led a dance class that got everyone moving, laughing, and learning.

Luana is a multidisciplinary artist whose work blends poetry, imagery, music, and movement. In her session, she shared how dance has long been a form of storytelling, communication, and resilience within Black communities.

From traditional Afro-Caribbean rhythms to modern urban African styles, Luana showed how dance continues to serve as both expression and empowerment.

The class wasn’t just about learning steps, it was about rhythm as language, connection, and emotion. 

Food, Music, and Connection

As the day wound down, the celebration ramped up again!

Delivery Hero HQ was filled with music, laughter, and delicious food. Heroes chatted, danced, and took part in a friendly trivia game, a fun way to see who’d been paying attention during the morning’s workshops (and maybe win a prize or two!)

The event wasn’t just about learning, it was about coming together as a community, honoring culture while creating new memories side by side.

Delivery Hero Book Club

For those who prefer a quieter, more reflective space, our celebration continued with a special Book Club X Employee Resource Group (ERG) collaboration. The group came together to discuss “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa”, Walter Rodney’s groundbreaking work exploring the historical roots of inequality and exploitation.

It was a thought-provoking session, full of rich conversation and debate. The partnership between the Book Club and the Black Heroes ERG offered something for everyone, from deep thinkers to those just beginning their learning journey. 

Community

Throughout October, one theme stood out: community. 

Whether through hair, dance, books, or conversation, every event created moments of connection, opportunities to learn, celebrate, and reflect together.

Black History Month reminds us that education and celebration go hand in hand. It’s about honoring the past while actively shaping a more inclusive future, one where everyone feels seen, valued, and celebrated for who they are.
