Hero Month 2024

Posting date: 28/10/2024

It’s that time of year again—October! Which means ‘ Hero Month’ to employees at Delivery Hero! For those of you who don’t know, Hero Month is a month-long celebration dedicated to giving back.

The programme features  a whole host of volunteering opportunities, where employees get the chance to join forces for a common cause -  making a difference in our local community.

What happened this year?

This year, we got together with stakeholders across the business;  Executive Assistants, Employee Resource Group Leads and People Partners, to brainstorm ways to keep our commitment to giving back, while staying true to our core value: "We Are Heroes Because We Care."

Feedback from previous years showed that in-house volunteering was the biggest hit.  So, we honed in on that detail and collaborated with our long standing partner, Vostel, to focus on three impactful activities for our Hero Month:

  • Sandwich Making for the Homeless: Volunteers got together to make sandwiches using different combinations of ingredients to make delicious and filling meals for those in need. Once the sandwiches were made, they were carefully packed  into individually decorated bags for easy distribution.
  • Park Clean-Up: Volunteers went to a local park armed with trash bags and protective gloves, to pick up litter, clear away debris, and tidy up picnic areas and trails. This activity is all about caring for our environment, and encouraging sustainable habits. Our Heroes loved it -  being outdoors and working together is a great way to boost morale and connect with nature!
  • Assembling Care Packages for the Homeless: Packages included essentials like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes,  snacks, tissues and band-aids to provide the homeless with basic necessities for self care. After packing, some employees added a few personal touches, like including messages of hope and support. Another great way to spread positivity!

Flexible volunteering for everyone

We scheduled these volunteer sessions throughout October at various times, ensuring that there was something available for everyone’s busy calendar. We encouraged employees to partner up with a buddy, bring their whole team, or even go solo and meet new people!

We even gave employees the opportunity to find more fantastic volunteering opportunities on the Vostel platform, by connecting with local organizations that are making a positive impact, right here in Berlin.

Why it matters

As the programme is now well into its seventh year, there are many reasons why we continue to organize such events,  and why it is so important to our Hero Community:

  • Reinforcing Core Values: Hero Month highlights our commitment to caring and giving back—values that are at the heart of our global business.
  • Enhancing Mental Wellbeing: Research shows that giving back boosts mental wellbeing. Since employee wellbeing is a key focus, Hero Month is a perfect fit!
  • Fostering a Thriving Culture: A culture of giving is essential for our community’s success. Hero Month helps to encourage and nurture these traditions.

Teams around the world

It doesn’t stop with our local efforts in Berlin! Brands from around the globe, including PedidosYa, Talabat, Yemeksepeti, and eFood, joined in on the action, each brand bringing their unique take on the month.

eFood ran a month-long program focused on food donations. PedidosYa already offers volunteering hours to employees all year-round, but they increased their options during Hero Month to highlight its importance. Talabat organized a walkathon, whilst Yemeksepeti supported animal shelters in their region by visiting the animals and providing 300 kg’s of dog food. It truly is a global celebration of giving back!

A big impact

We want to say thank you to all of our Heroes and stakeholders for yet another successful Hero Month.

Are you ready to roll up your sleeves and make a difference?  Check out the Vostel platform to see what volunteering opportunities await you.
