Supporting Employee Career Growth with Internal Mobility

Posting date: 23/08/2024

Internal mobility allows you to make a new career move within your current company.  It can mean a horizontal move (sideways into a role at the same level), or even diagonally (a mix of a new role and new responsibilities!) Internal mobility can include transfers to different departments, or even to different offices around the world.

At Delivery Hero, we truly value internal mobility and celebrate the success stories of our talented Heroes who have traded capes and transitioned to new roles within the organization. We believe this can be a valuable pathway to personal growth, job satisfaction and a deeper understanding of the organization, which in turn can lead to a stronger career and better experience.

It’s something we’re always embracing and encouraging within our community in order to allow Heroes to develop their skills and get involved with a different area of the business. By sharing stories of internal mobility, we aim to inspire others to explore exciting opportunities and highlight our commitment to fostering growth within our company.

Hossameldein Elfayoumi is a Backend Engineer who has been working at Delivery Hero for 2 years. He shared how his recent move to Quick Commerce had boosted his technical knowledge:

“Moving into a new team exposed me to TIER 1 service expectations, pushing me to learn new skills and apply theoretical concepts in real-world scenarios. This experience significantly boosted my technical capabilities and problem-solving abilities.

I discovered opportunities to work on large-scale technical problems and manage complex infrastructure.”

Employees who have moved internally can bring a wealth of knowledge about the company’s operations, culture, and values. They often hit the ground running because they already understand the company and its goals.

Michael Elyas is a Senior Engineering Manager in the Logistics team, who joined Delivery Hero in November 2021. He shared how he experienced just that when he made the move:

“I transitioned to a new role in the Order Processing Squad, which led to my promotion to Senior Engineering Manager. While there wasn't a suitable role available in my original Workforce tribe, an opportunity opened up in the Deliveries tribe.

This transition allowed me to manage multiple squads, including critical services, and I became a domain lead. The move exposed me to more complex responsibilities and deepened my understanding of the logistics business, contributing to my professional growth and readiness for higher-level roles.”

Moving within a company gives you the chance to build a wider network. The more you work with different stakeholders across different departments, the better you understand how the company operates as a whole.

Building new relationships can be invaluable for your career. Not only can they provide you with support and advice, but having a strong internal network can also lead to more opportunities.

On this point of building greater awareness, Hossameldein shared that: “Participating in learning sessions deepened my knowledge and enhanced my ability to handle advanced monitoring and performance tasks.

Transitioning from a TIER 3 to a TIER 1 service role broadened my understanding of Delivery Hero's operations and business impact. It improved my confidence in making technical decisions and communicating with stakeholders, enhancing my adaptability and expertise.”
