Black History Month at Delivery Hero

As October draws to a close, we’re thinking about Black History Month and celebrating the coming together of the Black Heroes Employee Resource Group. 

This is a special time for us to reflect on the incredible contributions of Black individuals throughout history, and to honor our amazing colleagues here at Delivery Hero.

Meet The  Black Heroes Employee Resource Group

At the heart of our celebrations is the Black Heroes Employee Resource Group (ERG). This group was formed on November 29,  2023 in order to celebrate our Black colleagues and to foster a culture of diverse allyship across Delivery Hero. We believe that when we uplift each other, we create a stronger, more inclusive workplace.

Why Black History Month Matters

In short, it’s all about educating, celebrating, engaging, and inspiring:

• Educate: We take this month as an opportunity to inform everyone about significant historical events, influential figures, and the contributions of Black individuals. It’s all about understanding the past, to improve our future.
• Celebrate: This is a chance to highlight the vibrant culture, arts, and achievements that are part of the experience. Trust us, there’s so much to celebrate!
• Engage: We want everyone involved! Through many interactive and educational activities, our ERG made sure that everyone at Delivery Hero can participate in the fun.
• Inspire: We showcased leaders and individuals from across the business, with stories of progress, motivating us all to strive for a more inclusive world.

Exciting Activities

This month has been a whirlwind of activities that embody the spirit of Black History Month. Here’s a quick rundown of what we’ve been up to:

• African Sweets Teaser: Kicking off at the end of September, our ERG members treated everyone to a delicious teaser featuring sweets from various African and Black culture-inspired cuisines. Let’s just say, our taste buds are still thanking us!
• Content Series: We launched an engaging content series showcasing interviews and “Day in the Life” video stories of our Black Heroes. They talked about why Black History Month is important for the community, favorite dishes, and why Berlin is an awesome place to live -  these stories shine a light on the diverse experiences within our community. • Panel Discussion: On Friday October 25th, there was a full day of activities, starting with a thought-provoking panel discussion titled "Code-switching, Fitting In, or Standing Out: The Realities of Being 'The Only One'". This panel discussion featured leaders from across the organization, including; Larry Herzog Butler, Senior Director of Internal Audit, Gbemisola Jones, Director of Communications, Olawale Oladunni, Senior Director of Product Design, and Shiro Theuri, Chief Technology Officer at Glovo. This was a great opportunity for all employees at Delivery Hero to dive deep into important conversations about identity and belonging, and was expertly hosted by David Chijioke, Associate Product Manager at Delivery Hero. 
• Wrap-Up Party: Later that afternoon there was an exclusive event for the Black Heroes community to celebrate and honor the impact of Black history at Delivery Hero, and wrap up the month with joy and recognition! The party featured a DJ, interactive art exhibition and a delicious buffet of African dishes. 
• New Merchandise: Who doesn’t love free swag!? Our freshly designed merchandise; tote bags and stickers, were a fun way to get into the spirit of BHM.

What’s next?

We invite all of our employees at Delivery Hero and our external community to celebrate and embrace the spirit of Black History Month.

Let’s continue to learn from one another, celebrate our differences, and inspire each other to be the best we can be. Here’s to a month filled with joy, education, and inspiration, and looking forward to what the next event brings!
