Job description

About the opportunity

We are on the lookout for a Staff Software Engineer (Kafka, Kotlin) to join the Customer Logistics Choice Domain on our journey to always deliver amazing experiences.

The services of the Choice Domain determine which restaurants and shops a customer can order from. This step is essential for the entire conversion funnel - and our products make sure customers have the best possible choice in all places and at all times. For that we need to consider the unique topology of each city and the dynamic state of the fleet in real time. A challenging task given the high volume of requests and low latency demands.
You will work closely with the feature teams to drive the reliability, quality, scalability and efficiency of our services.

If you're a creative problem solver who is hungry for a new adventure, an international workplace is waiting for you in the heart of Berlin!

  • Drive technical improvements for our services together with EMs: Identify architectural blockers, reliability risks, and cost leaks (“the problems”), determine ballpark effort, risk, and benefit of possible solutions, avoiding any over-engineering, prioritize, and plan solutions.
  • Consult/inform domain leads whenever the decision between risk, opportunity, and costs is non-trivial.
  • Solve the most critical problems for the domain that are beyond the scope of any squad while building consensus and sharing understanding of the solution.
  • Serve as the mediator on the technical topics inside the organization (between squads, domainsguilds) and outside of the organization (with platforms and brands)
  • Be a key contributor to the tribe’s Backend chapter and provide input on tribe-level technical topics.
  • Own the long-term architecture of the domain services and technical stack.
  • Promote best practices across the teams.

What you need to be successful

  • Very deep understanding & proven experience of JVM-based technologies (Kotlin knowledge is a plus)
  • Experience with complex distributed systems, microservice architectures, event-driven topologies using Kafka, and their observability
  • You have a deep understanding of the software stack, cloud infrastructure, and networking, and you can be hands-on in all of them when needed
  • You contribute completely autonomously, creating transparency of your work for your Tech Lead and all the EM/teams you interact with.
  • You have excellent communication skills and can clearly explain complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • You curious about the business goals our systems are serving

Nice to have:

  • You have prior experience with the Python stack (in production) and Machine learning techniques
  • You are passionate about technology and are not afraid to put forward and defend your opinions where needed.
  • You have a track record of sharing knowledge through brown-bag sessions, blog posts, or conferences.
