Engineering Manager - Global Search (all genders)

We are on the lookout for an Engineering Manager (all genders) to join Delivery Hero on our journey to always deliver amazing experiences. Search is a crucial part of Delivery Hero’s mission to always deliver an amazing experience- fast, easy and to your door. Search teams are responsible for powering search experience in more than 60 countries and 35 languages, enabling 80M+ searches each day across 4 continents. Our data informed culture helps us continuously improve to provide a high quality search experience to our diverse set of users. 

About the role

As an Engineering Manager, you will be focused on improving search experience for our users. You will care about making search results relevant so that users are able to find their favourite cuisine and items easily and faster. You have a strong and proven experience in applying technical skills to solve business problems. You are a strategic thinker with a strong understanding of engineering principles, and have the ability to get clarity on ambiguous business problems. You're an Engineering leader with a proven record of leading a multidisciplinary teams to build scalable solutions.

• How to make search results and suggestions relevant to our users?
• How to ensure our systems are stable and performant? 
• How do we improve ranking of search results?
• How do we reduce zero result rate for search queries? 
• and many more such questions... 

Your Mission

• Make the search experience frictionless for our users

• Define and drive the engineering excellence within the search tribe
• Own end to end delivery of team's projects
• Ensure continued service reliability, and timely technical support for all stakeholders
• Collaborate with Product, Analytics and Data Science to define and drive product roadmap 
• Manage career development of people in the team through continuous coaching and mentoring

• 2+ years experience of leading a cross-functional team as an Engineering Manager  
• Bachelor/ Master’s degree or equivalent in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or Similar 

• Experience working with Elasticsearch/Solr/Lucene, and has experience building scalable information retrieval systems

• Good understanding of search relevance. Experience in improving search relevance using text and semantic matching algorithms and NLP techniques 

• Strong coding skills in Java. Extensive experience in building performant large scale services. Knowledge of cloud platforms like GCP, AWS 
• Comfortable with ambiguity and able to navigate it to solve problems. Ability to break a problem into manageable tasks and establish clear goals for the team
• Effective communication and ability to explain complex work in simple terms to team members, stakeholders and senior leadership

• Be a role model for other Engineers in the team and help establish a culture of engineering excellence, collaboration, continuous learning, and innovation

• Proven expertise in stakeholder management and fostering strong relationships. Excellent business understanding to drive informed engineering decisions
