About the opportunity

Your Mission: 

  • Guide, empower, and mentor (Senior) Engineering Managers, as well as Staff and Principal Engineers, in enhancing their leadership skills.

  • Develop features that empower vendors to meet all operational requirements, thereby transforming them into top performers and positively impacting key performance indicators such as vendor/order failure rates and vendor preparation time delays.

  • Recommend and implement best practices in system design and architecture for high-load systems where precision is paramount.

  • Spearhead the technical domain in close partnership with business stakeholders, ensuring alignment and collaboration.

  • Lead the execution of both quarterly and long-term objectives and key results, taking full ownership of the outcomes.

  • Advocate for engineering excellence, offering practical advice on where to allocate engineering resources for maximum impact.

  • Expand recruitment efforts and establish criteria for identifying and attracting top talent, including developing a healthy and diverse organization.


What you need to be successful

Your Heroic Skills:

  • An engineering background with the capability to assess complex technical decisions, pinpoint potential technical issues, and devise effective solutions.

  • Demonstrated experience in independently leading teams, proactively seeking opportunities for advancement within your area of expertise in collaboration with your product counterpart.

  • Proven experience in overseeing multiple managers and teams concurrently.

  • Accountability for projects or applications of high complexity and traffic, including experience in constructing large-scale distributed systems and familiarity with incident management protocols.

  • Adept at adapting to changes and crafting pragmatic solutions in dynamic environments.

  • A keen eye for engineering productivity, with the ability to identify and address bottlenecks, ensuring frequent and high-quality deliverables.

We are seeking a Director of Engineering, Vendor Growth - Orders tribe (welcoming candidates of all genders) to spearhead one of our most impactful teams. This team is dedicated to ensuring reliable order transmission at scale for our vendors (restaurant and shop owners). The focus of the Vendor Growth product line is to enhance the vendor experience post-onboarding, empowering vendors to efficiently manage their businesses, monitor performance, and process orders. This role encompasses various aspects of the order journey, including the development of features that allow restaurants to process orders across multiple vendor-facing products (mobile apps, web apps, POS, physical devices in kitchens), and to streamline how orders are communicated between riders and customers. This position is based at our Berlin HQ, at the heart of Berlin. You will work with Carmen Florea, our Product Director, across the product line you will collaborate with two other Directors of Engineering - Igor Veremchuk, who leads the Self-Service tribe, and Dariusz Rumiński, in charge of the Performance tribe - and report directly to the Senior Director of Engineering.

As the Director of Engineering, you will lead a team of over 40 engineering professionals and collaborate closely with Carmen to deliver business-critical services that enhance our restaurants' order fulfilment capabilities. Our system processes over 5 million orders daily, delivering features across more than 75 countries and 20 production environments in a cost-effective manner. This efficiency is supported by robust observability automation and leverages cutting-edge practices, including chaos engineering, canary deployments, and load tests of up to 10 times capacity, utilising diverse technologies to maintain our uptime above 99.995%. The Orders tribe works across multiple technologies (Java, Android/Kotlin, Flutter/Dart, Kubernetes, AWS).

The Team's Achievements in The Last 12 Months:

  • Achieved zero failed orders, reaching our annual goal of staying within an order loss budget of less than 0.005%.

  • Successfully managed orders in the billions for food and groceries, serving a customer base in the multi-millions.

  • Initiated the development of our new omnichannel experience for vendors, consolidating six distinct products into a streamlined offering of one mobile app and one web app, set to launch in summer 2024.

  • Launched new, significant features that enhance operational efficiency, including preparation time adjustments and item replacements, as well as global rollout of features aimed at aiding vendors in order recovery and faster processing, such as auto-acceptance of orders, enabling modifications during preparation, and facilitating direct communication with customers for item replacements.
