Data Science Manager - Search & Recommendations (Global Discovery)

We are on the lookout for a Data Science Manager (all genders) to lead one of our teams in global discovery. At Global Discovery, we craft the central Search and Recommendation services that serve millions of customers daily in more than 70 countries around the globe. 

Science is at the core of our services using Machine Learning and AI to create truly personalized recommendations, decode our customers’ queries and intent, learn to rank our search results and create semantic matching. All of that for a diverse set of languages like Spanish, Arabic, English, Mandarin or Korean. Since our algorithms run on a grand scale with thousands of requests per minute, deployment and operating Machine Learning algorithms and building robust data pipelines is core to creating impact with our research.

• Utilize your expertise in science and leadership to guide a talented team in researching innovative and impactful machine learning and AI based solutions to help millions of customers in their journey. Help your team to stay up-to-date with the latest research on search and recommendations and how to apply it in practical ways.

• Supervise and continuously improve the entire lifecycle of machine learning projects from ideation, data manipulation, model building, experimentation, to deploying it into production at scale in collaboration with other data scientists and engineers. 

• Cultivate a diverse, healthy and high-performance team by nurturing talent, providing direction, and building a culture of scientific excellence, continuous learning and innovation.

• Guiding and coaching data scientists, data and backend engineers, mentoring them in technical and non-technical aspects of their work.

• Partner with the product team to develop solutions for real customer problems that drive business impact and jointly manage stakeholders, dependencies and priorities.

• Work in collaboration with other science leaders across the organization to define the long-term science strategy of the area. Build impactful relationships with our science and engineering partners in our local brand teams around the world.

• You have a master or PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Math or related fields coupled with 5+ years of experience of building machine learning solutions in industry contexts and 2+ years in leadership roles.

• Proficiency of a wide variety of Machine learning and Statistical methods (Classical ML, Deep Learning, NLP, and Recommendation Systems) and their pros-cons with the ability to identify the best approach and methods suitable for a problem

• Strong coding skills in Python and SQL. Experience working with the Scientific Python stack, Airflow, and cloud platforms like GCP

• An adaptable leader who thrives in ambiguity, with a knack for breaking down complex problems into actionable steps.

• Proven expertise in stakeholder management and fostering strong relationships. Excellent business understanding to drive informed engineering decisions

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and ability to influence beyond the team.
